Personal Statement

I grew up in rural Connecticut, surrounded by farms and meadows and woods. Trips to the Connecticut shore developed my love of the sea. Occasionally, my family would drive to New York City to visit a relative. Mentally I would calculate the amount of earth covered by pavement as we closed in on the city; 10%, 20% 90%. I could not be happy as a city dweller, trapped in great buildings, nothing to see outside windows but concrete and steel.

When I decided I needed to paint, the subject was clear: this delicate, blue marble we call earth.I began my journey as a painter learning to paint on site, outdoors, a plein air painter. I still paint outdoors, but also use my plein air paintings or photos, or memories of my travels on this beautiful planet to develop studio paintings. I like to vary the style of my paintings by experimenting with different oil mediums and techniques.

My formal education was focused on my becoming an art educator. I have taught multiple art mediums in Connecticut Schools for 25 years. Painting, however, is my first choice for personal expression.

Now, I have the gift of time to paint from my soul and share with my viewers the beauty and frailty of our shared home. There is no “Planet B”.
